Dow Electronic Materials, a business unit of The Dow Chemical Company (NYSE:DOW), today introduced its comprehensive Light Enabled by Dow materials portfolio to extend the company’s expertise in materials for the light emitting diode (LED) materials market. These materials are designed to support the critical lithography, chemical mechanical planarization (CMP) and metallization process steps for manufacturing LEDs in addition to its widely adopted metalorganic chemical vapor deposition (MOCVD) precursors and delivery technologies for epitaxy.

“As the LED industry matures, it is focused on increasing device efficiency and manufacturing yields, which ultimately drive down costs,” said Nate Brese, LED Technologies marketing director, Dow Electronic Materials. “The accelerated growth of the LED market has created demand for new, high quality materials that can address these emerging market requirements. Dow delivers the industry’s strongest materials science expertise to its customers, bringing over 35 years of experience in LED manufacturing working with MOCVD precursors and several decades of experience from the related semiconductor manufacturing industry.”

The new Light Enabled by Dow portfolio is comprised of:

  • Lithography: Dow’s i-line resists that meet a wide range of thickness and temperature requirements and can be tuned to meet a variety of customer specifications.
  • CMP: MACHPLANER™ MS2000 colloidal silica-based slurry demonstrates the company’s fundamental understanding of the chemistry required to facilitate the planarity of sapphire wafers used for LED manufacturing.
  • Metallization: Dow brings its 50 years of experience in metallization to LED manufacturing with a portfolio of materials, including its SILVER GLO™ and SILVERJET™ silver electroplating materials, as well as materials under development to address the market need for metals with higher reflectivity that enable greater light extraction from each device. Dow offers cyanide-free chemistry to meet customer needs and local regulations, in addition to offering novel anti-tarnish agents to increase device lifetime.
  • Epi Precursors: Dow’s production-proven, high purity OPTOGRADE™ metalorganic precursors include TMG, TEG, TMI, TMA and CP2Mg for CVD. The company’s expertise extends to its cost-effective VAPORSTATION™ III central delivery system that provides precise and uninterrupted delivery of precursor vapor to as many as 10 CVD tools with reduced cylinder change-outs, better efficiency and increased safety.

In China, Dow’s LED Technologies business is based in the Shanghai Dow Center, a fully integrated corporate research and application development center that employs 500 leading scientists and engineers working in over 80 state-of-the-art laboratories. As a global supplier to the LED industry, Dow brings an extensive manufacturing capability and advanced quality control systems that facilitate delivery of the highest quality materials in volume quantities. Complementing its manufacturing capacity is its broad network of local technical service and support offices that provide direct support to customers around the world.
