Dow’s Asia CMP Manufacturing and Technical Center was designated as a benchmarking enterprise and awarded the 2016 Taiwan National Occupational Safety and Health Award by the Ministry of Labor, affirming Dow's outstanding performance in occupational safety and in creating a healthy workplace.

The Ministry of Labor’s 2016 National Occupational Safety and Health Award was presented at a ceremony on November 8. To the left is Wan-i Lin, Minister without Portfolio of Executive Yuan, and to the right is T. J. Wu, president of Dow Taiwan.

“This award is a credit to every one of our employees who model and practice safe behaviors daily,” said Mario Stanghellini, vice president and global business director, CMP Technologies, Dow Electronic Materials. “By prioritizing safety as the number one objective in our manufacturing operations, our customers benefit from the highest levels of quality and service.”

Dow’s Asia CMP Manufacturing and Technical Center produces materials for chemical mechanical planarization (CMP), which are used in semiconductor manufacturing. In June, the business broke ground on an expansion project to increase the site’s capacity and capabilities. Dow has a nearly 50-year history of growth in Taiwan, during which time it has practiced sustainable development, establishing an ideal role model for sustainable operations in Taiwan.

“Dow has always valued sustainable development. The impact that our facilities have on the environment for decades or even centuries to come is taken into consideration starting from the preliminary stages of building construction,” said T. J. Wu, president of Dow Taiwan. “We continuously strive to innovate, research, and develop eco-friendly products in the hope of minimizing our impact on the environment and to progressively raise the bar for sustainable development.”

The ‘human element’ is an important indicator in Dow’s efforts towards achieving sustainable development. Creating a safe work environment is a core value of Dow’s corporate social responsibility.

“Employees are our most important asset. They are key to supporting our customers in achieving success, advancing industry progress, and practicing corporate social responsibility,” said Dennis Chen, South Asia business director, CMP Technologies, Dow Electronic Materials. “Our objective is to create a safe, healthy, and supportive workplace to enable our employees to reach their maximum potential.”

On September 30, 2016, Dow’s CMP Center in Hsinchu reached a total of 2,453 occupational hazard-free days, equivalent to 3.6 million working hours, marking a significant milestone in the implementation of occupational safety. Site leaders take preventative measures against accidents and injuries by organizing safety sharing sessions for all employees before starting every safety meeting. This activity encourages employees to observe on-site safety and to report any industrial safety-related opportunities.

“We have a standard operating principle in Hsinchu: ‘Outstanding occupational safety equals outstanding quality, which equals outstanding productivity.' This is also our core value,” said Cliff Chen, Hsinchu Site leader, Dow Electronic Materials. “Through continuous education and reminders, these concepts have been internalized by our employees, which is reflected in an excellent safety record and has further become an important part of our corporate culture.”

Globally, Dow will continue its efforts in achieving its 2025 Sustainability Goals, whereas Dow Taiwan continues to promote sustainable development in Taiwan with a series of proactive measures. By maintaining a top-tier environment, excellent health and safety performance, delivering innovative eco-friendly products, and creating industry-changing collaboration opportunities, it progressively shapes a more sustainable future.
